When the mother (Katrin Wichmann) of Martha (Lotta Herzog), Mikkel (Gregory Richters) and Mats (Samuel Muller) has an accident during a stay in New York, their father (Denis Moschitto) has to go to the USA to be with her, and the three siblings have to go to their grandmother – a grandmother they have never met before. Grandmother Inge (Johanna Gastdorf) lives alone with her pets high up in the north, on the Schlei, on a headland. Her little cottage, far away from their home in Stuttgart, has no mobile phone reception, no telephone connection and no road access. Inge hasn’t had anyone so close to her for a while, and it shows. But the grandchildren gradually crack the lonely woman’s hard shell and grow through the tasks that their grandmother assigns them without hesitation. With tender, gruff realism, Kirsten Boies’ loving and humorous summer adventure tells of the big issues that children have to deal with when they want to develop self-confidence and take on responsibility.
