Full of anticipation, Martha, Mikkel, and Mats get off the bus in Sommerby: they’ve been looking forward to spending Christmas at Grandma Inge’s, with lots of snow and the excitement of the holiday season. But then, inside Grandma Inge’s thatched-roof house, the atmosphere is anything but festive: instead of snow, there’s lousy weather, and Grandma Inge dismisses Christmas decorations as frivolous nonsense. As always, though, there’s plenty to do: Mikkel has to tend to the chickens while also dealing with a marten, Mats has to keep a secret from Dilara, and Martha is experiencing her first bout of enthusiasm. On top of that, a storm sweeps across the Schlei and the power goes out. The protest to save the Schnasselbude—the popular hangout and home of Martha’s vacation friend Enes—has to be canceled. And it’s uncertain whether the parents will make it from Stuttgart to the Schlei by Christmas Eve. So things are far from going as planned. And that’s exactly where the true spirit of Christmas shines through. Because everyone sticks together, helps one another, and overcomes the difficulties as a team. And so the siblings discover what this special time is really all about: the magic of being together. “Christmas in Sommerby” is the second film adaptation of Kirsten Boie’s Sommerby series—a heartwarming, deeply uplifting family story about friendship, resilience, and solidarity.
